In the July 6, 2009 issue of Time Magazine, President Franklin D. Roosevelt is featured for his impact on the American economy during the Great Depression. In a featured article of her own, The Relentless Mrs. Roosevelt is featured in her own right for the impact she had as well.
Mrs. Roosevelt carved out her own niche and started many of the practices we see other first ladies continuing to do today. Mrs. Roosevelt was the first to hold press conferences and to visit US Soldiers at war unaccompanied by her husband. She was humble and authentic, qualities that great leaders possess.
Author Robin Berber wrote a book featuring Eleanor’s unique contributions as a leader: Leadership the Eleanor Roosevelt Way: Timeless Strategies from the First Lady of Courage. We encourage you to read more about the women in leadership roles. Perhaps we have another great Eleanor in our midst!

When we hear “leaders in the entertainment industry,” usually that means popularity, the most photographed, the most talked about, and the most sought after for what often times can be reduced to gossip.
Most importantly, however, we cannot assume popularity equates to the kind of leadership that can “make a mama proud”! With all due respect to the deceased, and based upon your understanding of highly regarded, effective leadership, how do you evaluate each of these icons in the entertainment industry? What are your observations regarding their authenticity, success (you watched their footage, bought their memorabilia/music), their likeability factor, distinctive popularity components, etc? Is it even a fair question to ask if you are a better person for your affinity for any or all of them? What distinguishes one from another in leadership qualities? What highly publicized behavior or verbal message did they put out there that made their stock go up or down in your opinion?
Read about their careers:
Ed McMahon
Farrah Fawcett
Michael Jackson

What concerns me is not the way things are, but rather the way people think things are.

The Leadership Trust® is offering a complimentary data collection that allows you to pinpoint potential problems. “If you don’t know, you can’t fix,” and even if you decide not to know, those perceptions of what’s not working at work are still out there and may even be occasional topics of casual conversation, thereby potentially affecting morale. Find out what needs to change or at least manage any faulty perceptions. And if you need further help doing so, we’re here to help you.
Find out from Heather how the anonymous data collection is performed and your findings shared. You’ll be all the better for it!
